 Let's Make a Tabletop Game Battlemap I've decided to begin livestreaming my C++ and Unreal Engine game development on Twitch . The first project I'll be working on is a tabletop game battlemap, with a focus on intuitive ease of use and grab-n-drop with a snap-to-grid setup. The goal is to have something that is fast to throw together a quick combat situation for D&D or Pathfinder or any other game needing some visualization of minis on a grid. Paper Character Setup & Movement

Alright, let's keep going. We left off with a little world of our own—our sandbox tile map—and extracted sprites in preparation of our Hero. But we didn't make him yet. Feel free to choose your own sprites for your own Hero or Heroine. I'll be using good ol' "Ethan" from Pokémon Gold/Silver  to keep the theme going. For animation, we need to create something called a Flipbook. Think of this as when you doodle in the corner of a book, or on some notecards, and then you flip the pages and it makes them animated. It's the same concept, except we're using those sprites. We'll need two different states of Flipbooks: movement and idle states. Let's begin with movement. The Wonderful World of Animation Left movement. These sprites have two images for movement. You can see above I've selected the two left facing ones. Right click the sprites and at the top of the menu click "Create Flipbook." Name the newly created file with your naming

There's a stark lack of content out there for using Unreal Engine 4's Paper2D system. If you do find content, it's primarily focused on side-scrolling platformers, like Super Mario Bros. or "Metroidvania" games. Well, I grew up with Pokémon. And Zelda. Those delicious "top-down" views. Because of a childhood in the '90s and a Game Boy Pocket/Color/Advance in my hands in the back of the family car on road trips, I have an unhealthy nostalgia for this perspective and the 2D sprite-licious RPGs of Nintendo. And I want to make one. So, where to begin? Collecting Our Sprites Can you hear the music? That'll work. That's a lot of little dudes. And a variety of color to use as well. Great for prototyping. Spriters-Resource is a good source, along with Open Game Art . Just check the license before you release anything. Obviously these Pokémon sprites are for prototyping only.
